The Democratic Women’s Club of Charlotte County recently made donations to the relief efforts of an extended family in Puerto Rico and to the Charlotte County Public Schools Homeless Education Project.
In December, the club sent both a monetary donation and boxes of blankets, hygiene products, paper products, and other hard-to-come-by necessities to a fundraiser set up by Charlotte County resident Carmen Sanz. Sanz then forwarded the funds and materials to assist extended family members who were trying to help fellow Puerto Ricans devastated by Hurricane Maria. Recipients Dina Sotomayor and Anita Torres sent appreciation messages back to the club.
Sotomayor writes “My niece and I were left without a roof and we lost our personal property…Thanks to Cousin Carmen Sanz we have been reached by your Democratic Women’s Club. God bless you all.”
In what has become a holiday tradition, at the holiday luncheon the club also donated assorted gift cards and gifts to the mothers in the Charlotte County Public Schools Homeless Education Project. Renee Rebhan, Homeless Education Liaison, writes “We would like to thank you for your generous donations…Each year, the Homeless Education Project continues to advance its mission by removing barriers for our homeless youths in our community. We provide outreach services for families and students with a focus on education…We have served over 280 homeless students this school year.”
