As we celebrate Black History Month and recognize how African American culture has profoundly shaped American culture in music, literature, art, sports, politics and business, we recognize that this month is not only about celebration. It is also about understanding and combating injustice that, sadly, continues in our country. A wise nation honors and learns from its past. It refuses to let the most important facts about our collective memories disappear. What happened in the past shapes and informs where and who we are and where we will be in the future.
Black History Month is a chance for Americans to learn of our nation’s history that is far too often neglected. Black history is American history. It’s a chance to honor and celebrate African-American achievement and promote kindness in all communities.
